Art Consulting Era Unlocked: Meet Contemporary Artist Jessica Vollrath
Story Time and Get To Know Contemporary Artist: Jessica Vollrath
For the longest time, I envisioned stepping into art consulting but didn’t have a clear roadmap. Unknowingly, The Black Curation became the vehicle to get me there. After years of exploring museums, galleries, art fairs, speaking with industry leaders, and self-funding much of this journey plus with support from paid subscribers — something big happened this past week but let me share a quick story.
In 2021, when I first started The Black Curation, Pencil on Paper Gallery was one of the first galleries to follow my Instagram. Over the past four years, we’ve supported each other’s creative journeys through reshares and comments. Last year, I finally met Valerie Gillespie in person while doing press in New York covering the Harlem Fine Arts Show. We were both so excited to see each other that we shared the biggest hug.
Since meeting at the art fair, we’ve stayed in touch, and last June, I hosted my first online event and invited Valerie as a guest speaker to talk about art collecting. It was an intimate, thoughtful conversation, and I really appreciated having someone with such significant industry experience there.
Fast forward to early 2025, I launched AMH Art Consulting LLC. Then in June, Valerie contacted me about an opportunity to help sell a few art pieces of an artist that she currently works with. We had a call to discuss the logistics then the work started with preparing this newsletter. The opportunity to introduce different emerging artists to my newsletter community in a new way that also allows for artwork to be purchased was super appealing to me. So, in today’s newsletter I am happy to share a Contemporary Artist To Know, her name is Jessica Vollrath.
Contemporary Artist To Know: Jessica Vollrath
At an early age, Jessica Vollrath developed a curiosity for painting around the age of 8 and spent her free time using art supplies her mother found at garage sales. In her adolescent years, an artist mentored throughout high school, this experience eventually played a significant role in her undergraduate years and beyond. Vollrath received her BFA from Howard University in 2011 and MFA from Texas Woman’s University in 2017. Vollrath primarily uses oil paint, and her current subject matter focuses on religious narratives, mystical ideas, and the profound mystery of what it means to be fully alive. Her work is a physical representation of the sacred space of internal exploration.
Below, you can learn more about Jessica Vollrath’s work from Pencil on Paper Gallery owner, Dr. Valerie Gillespie.
